Book Review: Fourth Wing

Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1)Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Honestly, I was a little nervous to read this book because of 1-all the hype around it and 2-people telling me it was mostly a romance book. Addressing these two things:
1- Fourth Wing lives up to its hype! I blew through this book. The writing was solid, the story was compelling, the characters were relatable, and the world was intriguing.
2- This is not a romance book. Yes, there was plenty of YA-hormonal tension. Yes, there was sex. But this was definitely a fantasy story with a romance subplot, which made me very happy. That said, when there are sex scenes, they are explicit and extended, so be prepared for that.

I loved that the main character, Violet, was a bookworm who fell back on her knowledge when stressed, reciting facts and figures in order to calm herself. I also adored the dragons in this book. They were as varied as the people, with distinct looks and personalities.

There were enough plot twists that, while I had a good idea where the story was going, I could never be 100% certain, so while I can't say I was surprised, I was engaged and entertained, which is exactly what a good book should do.

I have to say, I would never want to visit Violet's world in real life. The extreme disregard for human life in their society was disturbing. Plus there were just a lot of total a-holes. That said, the world was well-described and believable. I like that, while Violet's single-book arc felt complete and satisfying, there is a bigger threat on the horizon that pulls readers directly into the next book in the series. I can't wait to see where Yarros takes us!
