Book Review: Iron Flame

Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2)Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While I still enjoyed this book, it was a bit of a letdown after Fourth Wing.
I loved the world Yarros created in the first book, and we got to see a little more of it in the second, but the story mostly seemed to focus on the relationship between the main characters and whether or not they were going to have sex on any given day. The plot took a back seat to the romance. Or, more specifically, the sex.

We did get to meet some griffins and griffin riders, which was cool, and Yarros treated us to a pretty spectacular battle. There were some interesting plot twists that I had fun trying to guess, but there were also some things that just didn't entirely add up for me. For example: an antagonist character from the first book was brought back for no apparent reason, which was weird and confusing. It seemed more like the author was saying "because I felt like it" than there being any kind of logic to the decision.

Overall, I'm still curious enough to read the next book, but I'm wary about the direction this series might go.
